History of the Department

The Department of Applied Economics is one of the pioneering departments within the School of Economics, College of Humanities and Legal Studies (CHLS), University of Cape Coast. It was established to address the growing need for applied research and professional training in economics that responds directly to Ghana’s developmental challenges.

Over the years, the Department has developed academic programs and research initiatives that equip students with practical economic knowledge and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in policy institutions, financial organizations, academia, and international development agencies. Through teaching, research, and community engagement, the Department continues to contribute to the socio-economic transformation of Ghana and beyond.

Organizational Structure

The Department of Applied Economics operates within the framework of the School of Economics and collaborates closely with the College of Humanities and Legal Studies. Its organizational structure comprises:

  • Dean – Provides overall leadership at the School level.
  • Vice Dean – Supports the Dean in academic and administrative functions.
  • Heads of Department (HoDs) – Lead the respective departments, including Applied Economics.
  • Finance Officers – Manage financial planning and accountability.
  • Faculty Members – Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Professors engaged in teaching and research.
  • Non-Teaching Staff – Administrative and support staff who ensure smooth departmental operations.

Accreditation & Affiliations

The Department of Applied Economics operates under the accreditation of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

It also maintains active academic and research collaborations with:

  • African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) – for research capacity building and graduate training.
  • Ghana Financial Information Network (GhAFIN) – for research, policy engagement, and professional collaborations.
