Our History
A department created in 2018, out of a tradition of economics teaching at Cape Coast that began in 1962.
From Department of Economics to School of Economics
The Department of Economics of the University of Cape Coast was established in 1962, with the aim of training students in the teaching of economics. Over the following decades the discipline at Cape Coast broadened well past that original brief, and in 2018 the Department of Economics was restructured into the School of Economics.
The Department of Applied Economics
The Department of Applied Economics was created in that 2018 restructuring, to hold the applied and professional side of the School’s work. It has run programmes since then, adding degrees as the demand for economists with analytical, quantitative and policy-focused skills has grown.

The Department of Economics is established at the University of Cape Coast to train students in the teaching of economics.

2018
The Department of Economics is restructured into the School of Economics; the Department of Applied Economics is created.

2019
BSc Economics with Finance is accredited by the National Accreditation Board on 17 December.

2022
MPhil Blue Economy, Governance and Social Resilience is accredited by GTEC on 20 September, and admits its first sixteen students with support from the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) Impact III grant through ACECoR.

2023
A further fourteen MPhil students are admitted, supported by ACE Impact III and the Ocean Country Partnership Programme.

BSc Applied Economics is accredited by GTEC on 1 May.

2025
The first cohort of BSc Applied Economics students is admitted for the 2025/2026 academic year.
